It’s simply not acceptable

Uncategorized Nov 10, 2019

As a Business Strategist with an expertise in finance, you can probably imagine this is our busiest time of year. This is the time of year when EVERYONE is focused on cashflow and taxes. For far too many, this is the first time they’ve seen their financials all year. And that simply is not acceptable.

You know what else is not acceptable?

Not knowing your what you should expect to spend on growth.

When I talk with business owners for the first time, I always ask them what is your budget.

I’ve been keeping track of the responses over the years. It’s sad to report that 82% say they don’t know what their budget is, 15% say they don’t know what their request should cost and only 3% share with me unequivocally what they can spend and are very decisive. The 3% without doubt will make it into the 9% club. You know....the million dollar business club. The rest? Well, if they work with me, they will make it because I will teach them the important areas of focus in their business. If not, the odds are not working in their favor.

As founder and CEO of a business you want to scale and build into a legacy, you have to take responsibility for knowing your numbers. It’s just not enough to know how much money you have in the bank. You’ve got to know the rest. Like, how much you can spend on growth.

Yes, you have to spend in order to grow. But here’s the deal, if you don’t know how much you can spend nor how much it could cost, nor how much flexibility can be built into a solution, you won’t know how to measure your success.

Now I get it. There’s a myth that most have been operating by. That myth is never reveal your budget because if you do then you will be had. Let me tell you something that might work when you are buying a car but not when you are looking to grow your business. Keeping very important information close to the vest is stunting your growth!

Knowing your budget and sharing your limits allows you to partner with the right resources. Knowing your budget and sharing your limits actually gives you leverage.

Let me tell you about my client, Nancy. She is the owner of an Information Technology consulting firm. When we spoke about four years ago, she wasn’t familiar with her numbers, she didn’t have a budget and she didn’t know how much it should cost to get help with growing her business. All she knew was she needed help. She had reached capacity but if she didn’t make a change she was going to quit or die a slow a death.

Nancy hired me to help her grow.

In our first year together, we focused on her numbers. Nancy was nervous and apprehensive when it came to her finances, but we sliced and diced them and presented them in a way that she not only understands, but she could explain to others with confidence and conviction.

Every year we put a budget together. As a result, she knows what leverage she has to spend, invest and grow. Nancy’s confidence in her finances now has others literally giving her money. For example, she met with her banker just last week. This was supposed to be a routine check in, However, her banker has been watching her moves and has been impressed with how she’s running her business and how it has grown. Four years ago she was earning $350,000. Today she’s earning $3,000,000. Without prompting or prodding, her bank offered her a $600,000 line of credit to help fuel more growth!

That’s unheard of but for Nancy and the rest of my clients, having information and insight has made the impossible possible.

That’s what I want for you! I want you to have the confidence to increase your capacity while increasing your cash flow.
