Did You See Your Shadow? What Groundhog Day Has In Common With Your Strategic Goals

Today is Groundhog Day; the day many have traditionally waited to determine how close we are to spring.  According to Wikipedia,  “Groundhog Day is a traditional holiday celebrated on February 2. According to folklore, if it is cloudy when a groundhog emerges from its burrow on this day, then spring will come early; if it is sunny, the groundhog will supposedly see its shadow and retreat back into its burrow, and the winter weather will persist for six more weeks.”

Groundhog Day has come to have greater meaning for me over the years.  It marks a significant milestone in the business strategic planning process.  Based upon my personal experience and my experience working with hundreds of business owners, most strategic plans begin to unfold in the first quarter of the year.  I call it seed planting time.  Most, if not all, momentum surrounding strategic plans occur within the first ninety days of executing them.

Groundhog Day let’s us know that we have roughly 60 days left to complete the execution mode of our most significant plans.  It is the moment when the pulse should be checked to determine how much has been accomplished, what needs to be adjusted, and what fires need to be lit moving forward.

Groundhog Day is a defining moment!

So I ask you, did you see your shadow today?

As you rose from the weeds of the business hustle and bustle, how much have you actually achieved?  If you’ve made significant strides and opportunity is starting to develop or expand, you’ve done good and the spring will certainly be a season of growth.  If you instead find that you are continuing to repeat patterns and nothing significant has been accomplished, you can expect it to be a long, long winter.
