Back To The Future

Uncategorized Dec 01, 2019

Happy holidays! I pray your Thanksgiving was refreshing and rewarding.

I spent the time reflecting over the six important F's in my life: family, friends, finances, freedom, fun and flexibility. In fact, I had a little too much fun with family this holiday season. This is a picture my daughter snapped in a memory making moment on Thanksgiving day.

I really don’t know why I took the mic but it was a lot of fun and quite funny! Whitney Houston I am not....well, maybe only in the shower when no one else is around.

During my moments of reflection, I realize how hard it is to think about the things that are most important to me without revising the past and thinking about the future. In fact, what I’ve come to realize is your future is written all over your memories.

Do you remember the 80’s movie, Back To The Future?

In the movie, Michael J. Fox played Marty McFly who is thrown back into the '50s when an experiment by his scientist friend Doc Brown goes awry. Traveling through time, Marty encounters young versions of his parents and must make sure that they fall in love or he'll cease to exist.

Well, this weekend, I took a trip back to the future.

Yesterday, I scrolled back through the 9,021 pictures I have on my phone (Yep! I’m a data hog). I was curious to see how far my memories could take me and what I was thinking at that point in time.

To my surprise, picture number 27 dated November 21, 2013 was a snapshot of my whiteboard strategic plan.

You see, that year I was in limbo. At that time, I’d been in business for 16 years and seeking the answer to the question, what's next.

In the early days of 2013, I had an unshakable feeling that it was time for me to pivot and do something different. Back then, my children were approaching their final years in high school and I was getting very close to achieving my why which was to get them to and through college. While I'd always dreamed of building a legacy, they wanted no parts of my business. They made it a point to tell me they would never do what I did.

My children have been indirect partners in my business since they were babies. They observed the long nights. They experienced the round the clock frenzy. They were the ones who had to be quiet during business calls taken in my mobile office (my car). Having served as summer interns, seeing what it's like to be an accountant, and getting a court side view of the raw, behind the scenes of running that business, they knew they did not want what I'd built for themselves.

What I'd realized in the early days of 2013 is if I was to create a pathway to generational wealth and build a legacy, It was time to move into a new zone of genius. I had to build something that not only drew out my strengths, but theirs as well.

That began my journey to the future.

In the week just before Thanksgiving 2013, after months of agonizing over how a pivot would impact my family, friends, finances, freedom and flexibility, I took my pen to the board and mapped out my future.

Today, reflecting back over the words on that board, I realize while the name is different the concept is the same. Legacy Builders Business Accelerator was born on that day! The mastermind, the group coaching and consulting, the incorporation of experts in various disciplines, the anticipated growth results, were all crafted on November 21, 2013.

I truly believe when you write your vision and make it plain, the vision will manifest in its time IF you continue to move forward with your dreams and desires.

The journey back to the future did not just happen to me. I've helped hundreds of companies get back to theirs.
Last week alone, I helped a business owner plan her pivot beyond her plateau. What’s interesting is the things we mapped on her whiteboard were all a manifestation of her past experiences. However, prior to us mapping it out, she could not see it. During our one-on-one strategy session, we mapped the ability to create legacies in her own community, something she’s dreamed of doing forever but just didn’t know how to make it happen. Now she has a plan and a pathway to achieving her dream.

A few weeks ago I helped another business owner map her plan to create legacy partners within organizations. In this instance a dream was realized through the trends I saw in her business. After talking for 90 short minutes I was able to help this owner identify her natural attraction. In less than a week of mapping out her concept, she won a contract to deliver her new program.

As you know, it's planning season. Yet, this planning season seems so much more significant because we are entering a new decade! We are entering into a new phase of life and business. Going into the year 2020 with 20/20 vision is critical.

As I close this reflection, I am planning for and very much looking forward to helping 6 other business owners map their mission and get them ready for a BIG BANK year of legacy building. We will be getting back to the future and building the solid foundation necessary to realize their legacy dreams.

You see, building legacy now strengthens the future and makes it possible to solidify the plans you have for the important Fs in your life.
